HyDriven is proving the potential of hydrogen to accelerate the energy transition towards zero emission.

How? By building a racecar powered by hydrogen.

Since 2011, we have been focused on innovating hydrogen powered cars. We have done this in the Shell-Eco Marathon for eleven years and now we want to push the boundaries of hydrogen further. Last year we were the first team to complete all Formula Student events.

For now we have been the only student team to promote hydrogen at Formula Student, but finally other teams are making the switch!

We want to unite teams and show together that others must make the switch as well to accelerate the energy transition towards zero emission. We believe the Formula Student racing environment is the place to achieve that goal.

The perfect finale to our season! 🇫🇷🏁

We returned to the track where we made history in 2024 as the first ever Formula Student team to run a hydrogen-powered car in competition.

This time, Nova once again showed why hydrogen has a place in motorsport. Smooth scrutineering, a new PR on track, and an H₂ system so efficient we “could’ve left the charger at home”.

The biggest highlight?
Beating some conventional battery-electric teams at their own game! Proof that HyDriven is on the right track!

✨ Racing days at FSF! ✨

After days of preparation at Formula Student France, Nova hit the track and what a weekend it was!!

As Nova launched off the line in the Autocross race, the hydrogen system released its byproduct: pure water! A small but powerful reminder of how clean hydrogen driving can be. And compared to last year, she was flying! 💧

Endurance proved just how tough Formula Student can be, only 8 out of 24 cars finished this year. Nova battled electromagnetic interference that triggered the fuel cell system’s safety mode. Thanks to some quick thinking from our team, we were able to restart the system a couple of times, but the over-cautious safety mode prevented a fully timed run.

The team is happy: “If anything, we showed, at the same time, how incredibly complex the system is, and how well we are able to control it. We are not by any means done with Nova!”

This won’t be the last time Nova drives, stay tuned for more!

This was an accelerating day.

The morning started off challenging. Nova came to a halt due to a system error, but thanks to our teamwork we got her back on track.

In the afternoon it was time: a 75-meter sprint. The goal? Be faster than last year, and we did it! Nova clocked 6.703 seconds, more than a full second faster than last year.🔥

Not even a downpour could stop her: the first run in the rain went well. Unfortunately, due to play in the right front wheel, we couldn’t do a second run.

On to tomorrow: skid pad and autocross! 🏁

Static Events Day, more than racing!

Today was not only about showcasing Nova, but also the people and ideas behind her.

💼 Our Business Plan Presentation put a new concept to the test in front of the judges, who represent fictional investors.
⚙️ In the Engineering Design Event, we defended the technical choices behind Nova’s development. Why did you make this component out of steel instead of aluminium?
🏗️ And in the Cost & Manufacturing Event, we broke down every detail of production, from the smallest gears to big picture strategy. Our case study on how AI could optimize costs earned us great feedback and compliments!

It’s clear: Formula Student isn’t just about building a car, it’s about proving the vision, engineering, and strategy behind it.

Next up: finishing the electrical inspection and the all-important hydrogen checks

🇫🇷 Formula Student France… the season finale with Nova!

We’ve made it to the Transpolis Circuit in France for our last competition of the year. Since Austria, the team has been pushing hard, refining our hydrogen system, improving performance, and making sure Nova is ready for the challenge ahead.
The first inspections have already shown how far we’ve come:

🔧 Mechanical scrutineering went smoothly, with judges checking every detail (even the size of the “University of Twente” lettering down to the millimeter 👀). We passed!

🔋 Accumulator scrutineering followed right after, and what used to take three days in Austria, we wrapped up in just 2.5 hours. Again, a huge step forward! 🚀

It’s clear how much progress the team has made. Where technical checks once slowed us down, we’re now checking them off one by one, bringing Nova closer to the track.

Up next: our business, cost & manufacturing presentations, the hydrogen inspection, and finally… the racing itself 🏁 Stay tuned!

Before we left to France for the race, we made plenty of kilometers, water, and sweat. 💧💪
On the skidpad, during acceleration, autocross, and endurance tests, we pushed our hydrogen car to the limit. Every test run made Nova just a little more reliable and better prepared for our race. 🔧

We emptied the H₂ tank multiple times, debugged the system, carried out maintenance, and even set a new top speed! 🚀
In between, we also organized a filming day at the Midland Circuit in Lelystad and got our new team ready for their year. 🎥

In other words: we’ve been working hard to show up at the start line faster, stronger, and more reliable. And now… Formula Student France! 🇫🇷

Last week we took 𝘕𝘰𝘷𝘢, our hydrogen-powered Formula Student car, to the legendary Red Bull Ring for Formula Student Austria. A historic milestone for us and hydrogen motorsport.

It wasn’t always smooth sailing, but… we made it!

FSA Confirmed: 𝘕𝘰𝘷𝘢 is scrutineered and rule-compliant. A huge win for our team and for the future of hydrogen in racing.

We didn’t participate in all dynamic events, but 𝘄𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝘁 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗮 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗻 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 at the Red Bull Ring and reaching a new top speed in the paddock!

Our journey isn’t just about one competition. It’s about paving the way for hydrogen in motorsport. This 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗲’𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵.

Om day 5 we reached a huge milestone: Nova drove on the Red Bull Ring and that with an accumulator charged by our own hydrogen system! ⚡

It was the first time this year we’ve driven using electricity generated by hydrogen and it felt incredible to see her in motion. With limited test time, we couldn’t yet confirm if we could charge the accumulator while driving. So, we made a tough call: remove the hydrogen tank and continue testing purely on the electricity that is stored in our accumulator. This way, we could still collect valuable data for the future.

In the afternoon, we gave the brake test another shot. Unfortunately, still not a full lock on all four wheels, but we hit a top speed that was faster than our previous race car! 🏁

Now it’s time to pack up, reflect, and bring everything we’ve learned back to our workplace in Enschede. This was Nova’s first taste of the track and it won’t be her last!

Day 4 – First Test Drives & Hydrogen Milestones

Today was a big one: Our first day on the test track! Our goal: tackle the brake test, where the car has to lock all four wheels during a full brake stop. But before we could attempt that, we needed to pass hydrogen scrutineering.

And… we did it! ✅
Hydrogen scrutineering is all about safety, making sure the entire system is leak-free by pressurizing it and checking everything with sniffers and detectors. It’s a crucial step, and we’re proud to say Nova passed.

With the green light, we headed straight to the brake test. Unfortunately, we weren’t yet able lock all four wheels yet, so we’ll have to adjust our brake bias before trying again tomorrow… But seeing Nova take her first test drive on the grounds of the Red Bull Ring was absolutely incredible. A huge milestone for the team and the car!

Meanwhile, we were also busy with the Hydrogen Concept Challenge, where we presented our unique design and vision to the judges. Fingers crossed 🤞

And now that our hydrogen system is officially approved, we’re ready to take the next step: driving on the red bull ring with power generated by hydrogen. Tomorrow, the real fun begins!

Day 3 at Formula Student Austria 🇦🇹

After 15 hours of intense work, we finally passed accumulator scrutineering this morning! That allowed us to complete the full electrical inspection as well, which is a major milestone!

Today kicked off with the Cost & Manufacturing Event, where we broke down the production process and costs behind every part of our car. Later in the day, we had the Engineering Design Event, where we presented all our design decisions.

Meanwhile, we hit some bumps in the road to becoming the hydrogen car on the Red Bull Ring: one of the wheels stopped turning due to an electrical issue, but our team found the root cause and fixed it. Both wheels are turning again which is a big relief! 🛞⚙

We’ve already passed the tilt test thanks to our Formula Future results, and coming up are the rain, brake, and hydrogen inspections. Passing those means we can take part in the dynamic events!

It’s been a rollercoaster, but we’re making solid progress. Big thanks to everyone supporting us and stay tuned for some awesome photos we took this night on a really special place! 📸✨

Day 2 at Formula Student Austria 🏎🇦🇹

Today was all about moving our pit to its new location, on the Red Bull Ring. Due to a tight time slot, it was a fast-paced operation where we had to pack, move, unpack, and get straight to work! Right after unpacking we had our second shot at accumulator scrutineering. It started in the late morning and lasted until late in the night. A safety light didn’t meet the requirements, but our team quickly jumped into action to repair it and find a backup. The scrutineering wasn’t done yet, so we will go further on day 3. 💡

While accumulator scrutineering was happening, we also began the electrical inspection as far as we could go without having the accumulator. This will have a follow-up on day 3.

It was a long day, a late night, but real progress!

On to Day 3, we’re getting closer and closer! 🏁

Day 1 at Formula Student Austria is in the books! 🇦🇹🏁

We kicked things off with mechanical scrutineering. We didn’t pass right away, but after fixing some minor issues, we’re almost done (just waiting on the check of a document).
Next up was the driver safety check, and everything there went smoothly!

Later in the day, we went through accumulator scrutineering, but didn’t pass yet due to a few points to improve. An example is that we have to make sure the battery cables can only be connected in one specific way.

To wrap up the day, all teams gathered for the welcome event hosted by the race organizers. 🎉

It’s been a challenging but exciting start of the race week, on to day 2!

Last week we had the amazing opportunity to go to our first race, Formula Future, and this weekend we got the results in.
We became first in our class (EV) for the static events! This means that our business plan, our cost understanding and our design understanding was the best in our class. 💪

Day 2 at Formula Future focused on the static events and more scrutineering. 💻🔧

We started with presenting our design decisions and the economics behind our project, then moved straight into checks for the hydrogen system and accumulator.

The highlight of the day? Our car passed the tilt test! This is a test where the car is tilted to 60 degrees! The whole team was incredibly happy that we passed.

In order to become the first hydrogen car on the Red Bull Ring we still have some work to do on Nova. That is why we made the call to head back to our workplace and get everything ready for this amazing goal.

Formula Future learned us a lot from logistics to technical feedback and team coordination. Every step was a valuable experience for what’s ahead. 🚀

On day 1, Nova arrived and scrutineering officially started! It was all about checks, checks, and even more checks. During scrutineering our car was inspected for safety and engineering regulations. 🛠️

During Mechanical scrutineering, we got compliments on the solid rear wing and our compact design with an efficiently integrated hydrogen system. For Electrical, the scrutineers appreciated how well-prepared we were, with datasheets and photos ready for nearly every component. Both departments have still some work to do, so let’s hope that we can fix everything as soon as possible! 💪

Last week we had the opportunity to participate in an inspiring Running Dinner organized by @vdletgalmelo, @urenco_nederland, @etcnederland , @benchmark_almelo and @aeronamic, together with the other student teams: @electricsuperbiketwente, @solarteamtwente, @solarboattwente and @roboteamtwente.

During the dinner, where we sat next to others after each course, we had diverse and valuable conversations with representatives of the companies and with each other. Themes such as innovation, technology in Twente and the future were central. 🌍🔧

It was a very pleasant evening and above all a moment of connection between the students and some of the Twentse businesses.
